Free jet from wide gap

Free jet for a long split or circular pipe, parallel with the bottom (2-dimensional flow).

After this transitional area the jet spreads at a constant angle of 14. (cotan = 4). The velocity profile remains the same shape and is no longer dependent on the distance from the inflow opening (x). The flow velocity distribution can be described as a Gaussian –distribution with only two parameters: um (= ucentrum = umax) and b (a distance from the centre of the jet I which: u = um/2).

For elongated discharge openings (2-dimensional flow) for x = 12 b0:

The figure below shows the situation for elongated split. For the circular jet the virtual source of the jet is further inside the discharge opening.
